Unique local charm, exciting reindeer sleigh races, national treats. In March, the national holiday of the small peoples of the North, the Day of the Reindeer Breeder, begins to «roam» around the settlements of Yamal.
One of the first festival takes the village of Ratta. Yury Fisher, the head of the Krasnoselkupsky district, welcomes guests and residents: «It is from our village of Ratta that a series of such holidays begins in Yamal. Despite the frosty weather on the square where the festivities take place, it is warm and homely. Reindeer skin tents have been settled on the festive site. Polite hostesses treat guests with traditional Selkup dishes.
Guests respond to the holiday with special warmth. In addition to gas and oil fields, Yamal is the homeland of the unique cultural and ethnic semi-nomadic peoples of the Far North. Creative teams prepared a concert, an exhibition and sale of products by craftsmen from the House of Crafts. Various competitions were held during the day: for the best reindeer skin tent, the most beautiful reindeer team, competitions in national sports. And, of course, the most colorful events are reindeer sleigh races.
Tundra inhabitants demonstrated strength, dexterity and passion. The winners received well-deserved prizes. The main gift was a snowmobile, for the possession of which the participants in the reindeer sleigh races had to fight pretty hard, showing their own perseverance and «squeezing» the maximum of their abilities out of their reindeer.
