Forty five years ago, the Yuzhno-Russkoye field was discovered by the Urengoi oil and gas exploration expedition in the Krasnoselkupsky district of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. Today, it is being developed by OJSC Severneftegazprom, one of the largest suppliers of blue fuel to the Unified Gas Supply System (UGSS) of Russia and the flagship of hard-to-recover Turonian gas in our country.


On November 17, 1969, while drilling an exploratory well No. 6 in the Yuzhno-Russkaya area, a gas fountain was obtained from the Cenomanian deposits. So a new field appeared on the map of Russia.

In 1965–1971, other gas giants of the north of Western Siberia were discovered — Zapolyarnoe, Bovanenkovskoye, Urengoyskoye, Medvezhye and Yamburgskoye OGKM. The closest proximity to the transport infrastructure of the three last named fields predetermined their fate as top priorities in the development of the Nadym-Pur-Taz oil and gas bearing region.

At the same time, exploration and refinement of reserves continued at the Yuzhno-Russkoye OGKM. By 1979, the Cenomanian and Senonian reserves (later reclassified to Turonian) deposits were calculated and approved by the state commission. Detailed seismic surveys were also carried out in the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic sediments, as a result of which a conclusion was made about the prospects of their development.

The next time, the state showed an active interest in the field in 1990, when it became clear that in the near future it would be necessary to compensate for the declining production of those oil and gas storerooms of the YNAO that were first put into development. The second stage of exploration drilling began at Yuzhno-Russkoye, and by 1994 the availability of reserves was confirmed.

In 2001, OJSC Severneftegazprom obtained a license for geological research and production of hydrocarbon raw materials at the field. The company launched the construction of field infrastructure and in 2007 began operating the Yuzhno-Russkoye OGKM, and in 2009 (with the plan ahead of schedule exactly one year) brought it to its maximum design capacity.


In accordance with the development project of the Cenomanian deposit of the Yuzhno-Russkoye field, the production level of 25 billion cubic meters should be maintained until 2021, after which a gradual reduction in gas recovery will inevitably follow. In order to maximize the period of gas extraction from the subsoil of gas raw materials, OJSC Severneftegazprom decided to gradually introduce the Turonian deposit into the development.

Turonian gas is considered to be difficult to extract, which negatively affects the economic efficiency of design solutions and does not allow extracting it in traditional ways. Therefore, until 2011, no one was engaged in industrial development of such deposits in Russia.

At first, specialists of OJSC Severneftegazprom confirmed the productivity of the Turonian strata by testing twenty exploration wells and one observation well. After that, a double well was drilled, which marked the beginning of the experimental-industrial development of the turon in Russia.

On December 5, 2011, the first Turonian gas from the Yuzhno-Russkoye field entered the UGSS. This event became the point of reference for the new stage of development of the entire energy sector in the country.

“The development of hard-to-recover Turonian gas deposits is relevant not only for our company, but also for the entire energy industry in Russia. The applied production technologies make OJSC Severneftegazprom a pioneer in this area, and I think our successful experience will be widely applied in the future. Russia has huge reserves of Turonian gas, and other gas producers will have to extract it sooner or later. ”


Focusing on modern standards, striving to improve the efficiency of work, environmental friendliness and safety, OJSC Severneftegazprom pays great attention to the introduction of the latest technical and technological advances in the South-Russian Oil and Gas Group. The company updates its existing capacity, optimizes gas production processes, and develops inventive and rationalization activities.

Thus, to increase the energy efficiency of a single chain of processes for the extraction, transportation, processing, storage and distribution of natural gas, the company developed and patented an innovative system for managing technological gas losses after dry gas-dynamic seals of gas pumping units. The reduction in CO2-equivalent emissions from only two units installed at the field was about 13,377 tons per year.


With full responsibility, OJSC Severneftegazprom approaches the issues of environmental protection. All work at the field is carried out taking into account the requirements of the environmental policy of Gazprom, federal and regional regulations, international standards in the field of environmental safety and rational environmental management.

The company has implemented and uses an integrated system of quality management, environmental protection, labor protection and industrial safety in accordance with international standards ISO 14001: 2004, ISO 9001: 2008, OHSAS 18001: 2007. The environmental monitoring program of the Yuzhno-Russkoye field allows obtaining objective information about the sources of harmful emissions, controlling the volume of the latter and developing effective environmental protection measures.

Maintaining the balance between solving production problems and preserving the environment in its original form is one of the priority tasks for OJSC Severneftegazprom. For this purpose, for example, an innovative installation for the treatment of industrial and rainwater wastewater is being introduced at the South Russian Oil and Gas Complex today.

Investments of OJSC Severneftegazprom in carrying out environmental protection measures from 2010 to 2013 amounted to more than half a billion rubles.


The Yuzhno-Russkoye field is located in the Rasnoselkup district of the YNAO. The relationship between OJSC Severneftegazprom and the municipality is governed by the general cooperation agreement.

In accordance with this document, the gas company participates in the development of the region, contributes to the preservation of cultural practices of small populations, shows charity and sponsorship for fishing and reindeer herders, allocates funds for the development of national settlements, the purchase of transport , fuel and lubricants and equipment, provides support to national agricultural enterprises and the Association of Indigenous Minorities of the North “Yamal to Descendants!”.

Over the years of activity in the regions of presence of OJSC Severneftegazprom, assistance was provided for more than three hundred million rubles.


OJSC Severneftegazprom is a progressive enterprise that uses optimal technical solutions to increase the efficiency of its activities, energy conservation and environmental protection.

In February 2014, the construction of the second pilot industrial well for the production of Turonian gas was launched at the Yuzhno-Russkoye field. Stanislav Tsygankov, General Director of OJSC Severneftegazprom, appreciated this event in the following way:

The applied production technologies make OJSC Severneftegazprom a pioneer in this area, and I think our successful experience will be widely applied in the future. It is assumed that the information obtained during the implementation of the project for the industrial development of the Turonian deposits of the Yuzhno-Russkoye OGKM will serve as the basis for the general concept of the development of hard-to-recover gas reserves for the Gazprom Group as a whole. In addition to the innovative Turonian project, OJSC Severneftegazprom also ignores the senoman of the Yuzhno-Russkoye field. In particular, the company plans to commission the second stage of the booster compressor shop No. 1 by the end of 2015.

Any field goes through several phases of existence: discovery, active development and intensive growth in the volumes of raw materials selection, production stabilization at the maximum level, transition to the stage of falling production and conservation at the very end. Since forty-five years ago, the Yuzhno-Russkoye OGKM since 2009 has kept the highest level of gas production - twenty-five billion cubic meters annually. From 2019, the phased commissioning of the Turonian gas reservoir will begin, which will significantly extend the period of the field’s maximum productivity. And gas will be produced from Yuzhno-Russky in accordance with the license until the end of 2043.

OJSC SEVERNEFTEGAZPROM is one of the largest gas producing enterprises in Russia. The company's shareholders are OJSC Gazprom (50% plus six ordinary registered shares), as well as German Wintershall Holding GmbH (25% minus three ordinary registered shares plus three non-voting preferred shares) and E.ON Exploration and Production GmbH (25% minus three ordinary registered shares plus three preferred shares without the right to vote)

SOUTH RUSSIAN OIL AND GAS CONDENSATE DEPOSIT has a length of more than 85 km, width - more than 14 km. It is located in the northeastern part of Western Siberia - in the Krasnoselkupsky district of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, in the eastern part of the Tazovsky oil and gas bearing area of ​​the Nadym-Pur-Tazovsky oil and gas bearing area. Today, the total reserves of the field are estimated at 1 trillion m3 of gas. Gas reserves in the category A + B + C1 are 825.2 billion m3, in the category C2 - 208.9 billion m3, oil - 5.7 million tons.

The Turonian gas reservoir of the Yuzhno-Russkoye OGKM is located at a depth of 800–850 m and contains dry gas with a share of methane of 98%. Turonian gas reserves are estimated at more than 300 billion m3. Turon exploration is simpler and more profitable than the development of shale gas (the cost of the latter is much higher), but in terms of the technological complexity of production and the volume of costs it exceeds the same indicators of the development of Cenomanian deposits.
